I have been doing some really fun corporate presentations lately. I love doing these!! It really is a combination of teaching and nutrition- two loves of mine. Also, what a great way for a company to support their employees and start to create a culture of health! It’s basically a win-win. The employees feel better and perform better- and every employer knows the value of that. Here’s some interesting data on the impact of healthy nutritional choices in the office place.
In 2017 the Health Offices Research Team at the University of Twente in the Netherlands found some compelling evidence for adding healthy beverage and snack choices around the office. They found that just given the opportunity to drink spa water (water infused with cucumbers and mint or likewise) participants decreased their coffee consumption by 47% and increased their water consumption. If you’ve read my blog about water or about cortisol you know this is important! As a reminder, water in your system is crucial to looking good, feeling good and allowing your body to function. Dehydration, or the lack of water causes an inflammatory response. When you are dehydrated your body has a histamine response so the cells swell and allow more water in. It is our body’s way of trying to take care of itself. So, just a few glasses of water can decrease your chronic inflammation. Furthermore, the same report shared that the participants who were given an avocado and spinach smoothie outperformed their counterparts who ate a cream filled donut by 45%. I’m not sure how many offices are still providing donuts to their employees – but it might be time for change.
Simple choices so make big differences. I won’t get into the corporate research here but these findings are not in isolation. A company can easily increase the health and productivity of its team by educating employees on nutrition and providing healthful choices.
